How to Layer Necklaces like a Pro

You’ve all seen them…those trendy Instagram influencers or fashion innovators rocking the latest, hottest looks. And I’m sure you’ve simultaneously thought to yourself, “I just don’t know how to pull it off!”

Well good news, I’m here to show you how to layer necklaces like a pro in no time at all. Today’s topic: layered necklaces. What’s the secret formula for getting that just-right look? It’s easy if you follow these tips and tricks.

There are three tricks to layer necklaces like a pro:

  1. Combine Different Lengths and Styles
  2. Don't be Afraid of Mixing Metals
  3. Think about What you're Wearing

1. Combine Different Lengths and Styles

One of the key things to remember is that each necklace you layer should be somewhat different. Think about it: if you tried to wear three of the exact same necklaces, all at the same length, they would all blend together into one—the complete opposite goal of the layered look. Instead, choose pieces that vary in length (say, one choker with two longer pieces), as well as style (for instance a dainty chain paired with a heavier piece). Combining different shapes is another way to create an interesting combination, such as bar necklace with a standard pendant.

2. Don’t be Afraid of Mixing Metals

Long gone are the days of only wearing yellow gold with yellow gold, or silver with silver. Today, it’s super chic to wear mixed metals. Plus, it makes all of your pieces more versatile if you can create new combinations. So go ahead, wear your favorite gold chain with a contrasting silver accent, or even a pop of rose gold for a truly fresh feel. Even mixing in materials like gemstone, cording, bone, wood, and plastic help elevate the look in a unique way.

3. Think about what you’re Wearing

When layering necklaces, you should take into consideration the top that you’re wearing. Not all necklines are created equal, which means that if you choose a deep V-neck shirt, your necklace choices might be different than if you wore a close-cropped crew neck.

Play around with different layering options to see the result against different tops. For a deep, open neckline, try shorter chains that hit closer to the collarbone.

Whereas you can wear your long pendants with a higher neckline such as a crew neck or turtleneck. Your goal should be for the necklaces to stand out and not be hidden by the neckline.

Mastering the “neck mess” known as layering is really quite simple if you spend a little time experimenting. With so many fun and gorgeous pieces in your collection, why stop at wearing just one at a time? Try layering for a chic, on-trend vibe that can be dressed up or down, day to night.
